Clean your face regularly

Stop using soap! It can actually deteriorate your skin's natural, healthy appearance. Use cleansers with professional ingredients like salicylic or glycolic acid that will leave your face clean, plus improve your complexion. Often guys take their body towel right from their feet (and other areas) to their face. Buy a hand towel and reserve it for your face alone and stop dirtying up your mug right after you've washed.
Bottom line on why you should do this:
To avoid clogged pores, zits and zero social life.

Use a fresh blade to shave

Conventional razors cut hair by pinching the hair between the razor blade edge and the skin immediately in back of the hair. The duller the blade and the harder the hair the more force is required to cause the blade edge to penetrate the hair. The more the force applied, the more the skin behind the blade is pushed into a supporting mound. When the blade finally penetrates the hair, the blade leaps forward and shears off the skin.

The extent of this damage is a function of the applied cutting force. Depending on the toughness of your beard, change the blade somewhere between every three and every ten shaves, if you shave every day (it's different strokes for different folks, what can we say). If you're looking for a rule, two weeks is too long to go without changing blades. As to which brand of razor to use — you can't go wrong with any of the Gillette Mach series. If you're looking for something a little different, try the three blade from Recycline which has both a sharp and socially responsible edge.
Bottom line on why you should do this:
Do you really want to shear off mounds of skin on your face?

Nourish your skin

Take a look at your face in the mirror first. Dryness, cracking, dullness and roughness of the skin are common in cold, dry, windy weather. It is important, therefore, to hydrate skin and offer it rich nourishment, especially in the winter months.

It's best to moisturizer immediately after a shower. Another key to healthy looking skin is drinking plenty of water — your skin is the largest organ of your body and it gets thirsty. Not only do you want to use a moisturizer on your face (including an eye cream if you're concerned about staying young looking) but also on your hands and body.
Bottom line on why you should do this:
You don't live in the Outback. Why look like you do?

Don't shave with soap

Soaps are responsible for leaving your skin very dry and offer no substantive protection from the razor blade. They wipe off all traces of oil from your skin. If you have a dry skin you probably already know about the laundry list of adverse effects.

When you choose a shave cream, you want good lubricity to avoid nicks and scraps, a moisturizing formula to soothe your skin (most that say they are actually aren't — so look for liposomal vitamins which are the only ones that can absorb into you skin in the short amount of time shave cream is on your face), and one that's good for the environment (i.e., no pressurized cans).
Bottom line on why you should do this:
Because every guy can use a little lubricity now and then.

Don't shave with shave foam

Shaving destroys the skin's protective hydro-lipid layer, leaving skin more fragile and susceptible to free-radical damage. A thick cream protects your skin by helping your blade glide over bumps (the best do not lather — lather is a sign that it's a soap base and that's very drying and void of nourishment.
Bottom line on why you should do this:
Lather + Non-Gliding Shave = Unnecessary Pain & Suffering.

Don't overly complicate your routine

We consult doctors every day and it's unanimous — daily cleansing, shaving properly, and daily moisturizing is all a man needs to do to look great now and for years to come. When it comes to grooming, quality products make a difference. Use good products and do these three steps and you're good to go.
Bottom line on why you should do this:
Life's too short to spend it in front of the mirror with lame products.

Make sure to use sunscreen

We all know that the sun is the single most damaging thing to your skin, so make sure to protect yourself. Until we have one of our own (stay tuned in 2007), we'll recommend the one we like most. Check out Peter Thomas Roth Oil-Free Sunblock SPF 30. We like it because it permits minimal tanning, yet is light, oil free and isn't water resistant. It also moisturizes the skin. We advise you to get out in the sun because sunlight has been clinically tested to improve moods and increase your body's vitamin D production and endorphin release. Just take the tan slowly because the sun can seriously damage your skin.

The most important factor when picking a sunscreen is to get one that has an SPF of 15. Don't forget to apply sunscreen to sensitive areas like the tops of your feet, backs of your ears and neck, and areas of the scalp and hairline if your hair is thin or thinning.
Bottom line on why you should do this:
Frankly, this should be a no-brainer.

Hit the gym

Even if it is just to walk on the treadmill, exercise will help you maintain good posture, alleviate stress (which causes wrinkles), and increase blood flow (which keeps your whole body well oxygenated), not to mention that it keeps you fit! Fluctuating weight gain and loss can cause your skin and facial muscles to lose tone and appear flabby or sagging. You don't have to be a fitness guru to understand that exercising and maintaining your body on a regular, daily basis is going to keep it working for a longer period of time.

In addition to maintaining a healthy weight, exercise benefits your skin, hair and face tone. If you don't think you have the willpower to keep a steady regime, ask a friend to team up. Or better yet, join a gym and take advantage of their personal training programs. It's expensive, but working with a personal trainer is worth the investment because everyone benefits from a good butt-kicking.
Bottom line on why you should do this:
You'll be healthier, happier and more appealing to everyone around you.

Attend to hands and feet

Don't forget to include your hands and feet in your grooming routine. Hands get a lot of abuse, and can show age almost more than your face. Keep some moisturizer handy at your desk, in the car, or anywhere that you frequently have a few minutes to let it absorb (we don't want you to experience the dreaded 'slippery handshake'). Well-manicured nails and toes contribute to good hygiene and grooming habits. Make time to clip your nails at home.

Foot odor is a common problem among many men, and is relatively easy to treat. Scrub your feet daily and dry them completely (very important for you athletes!). Insert a pair of Odor-Eaters Insoles into your shoes, which will absorb wetness and odor. A man's hands don't need to look pretty, but they should certainly be presentable. After all, your mitts are the first thing you offer a prospective boss or wife. To keep your hands looking good, try a manicure (we know what your thinking, but you will love it, trust us).
Bottom line on why you should do this:
If they can't get past your hands and feet, forget about getting close to the rest of you!

Don't ignore "bacne"

Yeah, yeah, it's a cute name, but it's no laughing matter. You're the only person that doesn't have to look at it (let alone feel it), but everyone else who is close to you does. If you suffer from acne across your back, there is a simple solution that works a good amount of the time. You probably sweat a lot.

Cotton can trap sweat and clog pores on your back. Try wearing synthetic fabrics and remember to keep it loose: the point is for air to be able to get to your pores. Take a shower immediately after exercising or sweating heavily. Don't wear sweaty clothes any longer than necessary. Wash irritated skin with a salicylic acid cleanser (if it works for acne on your face, it's good enough for your back).
Bottom line on why you should do this:
Do you even have to ask?!

When you're balding, don't let your hair grow long

Balding is another common problem among men. Opting for a comb-over just dates your look. Get comfortable with your changing look and opt for a modern short haircut. We've asked hundreds of women and the numbers speak for themselves — cut it short when you start losing it.

Bottom line on why you should do this:
Who do you want to look like: Matt Lauer or Rudy Giuliani?

Eat Right, Look Good!

Add a couple of servings a week of these fountain-of-youth foods and keep your skin looking young and healthy:
  1. Sunflower Seeds: These salty wonders have the highest natural vitamin E content of any food around. "Vitamin E is one of the most important nutrients around for looking younger," says Barry Swanson, Ph.D., a professor of food science at Washington State University. "No antioxidant is more effective at fighting the aging effects of free radicals."
  2. Spinach and Beans: Researchers in Australia, Indonesia and Sweden studied the diets of 400 elderly men and women, and found that those who ate the most leafy green vegetables and beans had the fewest wrinkles. The reason? Spinach and beans are full of compounds that help prevent and repair wear and tear on your skin cells as you get older.
  3. Grape Juice: Besides providing protection from heart attack and stroke, grape juice can also help keep your middle-aged skin from sagging. "Grapes are filled with antioxidant polyphenols that help to keep your skin flexible and elastic," says Swanson.
  4. Sweet Potatoes: Overexposure to the sun is one of the primary reasons men age prematurely. But sweet potatoes may help to fight sun damage. European researchers recently found that pigments from beta-carotene-rich foods — like sweet potatoes and carrots — can build up in your skin, helping to prevent damage from ultraviolet rays.
  5. Cheese: No wonder rats always look so young. "Cheese is one of the best foods you can eat for your teeth," says Matthew Messina, D.D.S., an American Dental Association spokesman. "It's a good source of calcium, to keep your teeth strong. Plus, eating cheese can lower the levels of bacteria in your mouth and keep your teeth clean and cavity-free," he says. Dr. Messina recommends eating at least two servings of block cheese every week.

Who do you want to look like: Matt Lauer or Rudy Giuliani?
